Marinakis: 3rd game in Greek Basketball League finals series postponed

Marinakis: Game 3 of Greek Basket League finals postponed after violence; govt rejects Sinai Monastery eviction claims, affirms commitment to its protection and agreements.

The government's reaction was immediate regarding the events that took place on Sunday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium during the second game in the best-of-five finals series of the Greek Basket League, between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos. As government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced on Monday, the third final, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, has been postponed.
Additionally, he said, on the morning of the same day, the owners of the two basketball clubs have been summoned to the ministry for a meeting with the Deputy Sports Minister Giannis Vroutsis, to make explicit commitments that this situation will come to an end. Otherwise, this year's championship will be permanently suspended.
As the spokesperson pointed out, 15 months ago, the government undertook a series of legislative initiatives and decisions aimed at putting an end to incidents of violence that have no place in professional sports. These included automatic penalties, harsher criminal sentences, and mandatory surveillance cameras and entry controls, Marinakis said, adding:
"From the start, we remained committed to enforcing these measures, and with the majority of games taking place without incidents - or with the imposition of strict yet fair penalties where situations risked getting out of hand - it became clear that where there is will and consistency, there are also results.
"Yesterday’s scenes do no credit to professional sports, and even less so to two teams that have been leading figures at the European level for many years. Wherever there are criminal or disciplinary responsibilities, they will be assigned, and the law will be enforced to the fullest extent.
"The Government has proven, through actions and not just words, that there is zero tolerance for toxic phenomena of violence and delinquency - whether they occur in stadiums, universities, or anywhere else."

Marinakis on the Sinai Monastery: Premature claims of confiscation and eviction of the monks are untrue

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, while briefing the press on Monday, referred to the issue of the Monastery of St Catherine in Sinai, noted that the Greek government has read the relevant court ruling and he dismissed the opposition's claims as untrue.
"There was an incredible rush to jump to conclusions by the entire opposition. The decision accepts the Monastery’s appeal regarding the lawful possession of all areas of worship and the perpetual right to conduct religious services. However, it does not state that the Monastery owns these spaces of worship. It also specifies that the Monastery has no ownership of surrounding non-religious areas. Claims that circulated prematurely about the eviction of monks and confiscation of property are not true.
"There is a clear commitment on Greece's part to uphold the agreements made, and that is the message the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with the rest of the Greek delegation, will convey on Wednesday. Greece supports the long-standing and established status of the Monastery and will seek to finalise the agreement with the Egyptian side on the basis of what was discussed and announced at the High-level Cooperation Council between the two countries. We will give our all - our full efforts - because this is an issue directly tied to our faith, to the values of Orthodoxy, and it reflects the views of Greek citizens around the world. There is also the stance of the opposition, which is deeply problematic. They spoke of a strategic diplomatic failure by the government. Unfortunately, they have learned nothing from the gaslighting and cover-ups surrounding a tragic accident, and now they are trying to 'export' their trafficking in falsehoods even to matters relating to the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai."
